Vor mehr als acht Jahren veröffentlichte Apple sein revolutionäres (wie immer bei der Steve-Jobs-Firma) Programm “iBooks Author”, mit dem jeder Mensch auf einfache Weise interaktive E-Books erstellen und in Apples Online-Buchladen veröffentlichen konnte. Das Programm hatte bei Apple allerdings nie höchste Priorität. Lange waren damit erstellte E-Books nicht einmal auf dem iPhone lesbar (das änderte sich erst 2015, also acht Jahre nach Vorstellung des ersten iPhone und drei Jahre nach Veröffentlichung von iBooks Author). Zögerlich war Apple auch bei der Unterstützung der Branchenstandards ePub und ePub 3. Das letzte echte Update gab es vor zwei Jahren.

Ich selbst habe mit der Software diverse populärwissenschaftliche E-Books erstellt. Videos und Fotos ließen sich darin prima einbinden, und das Programm ist allemal einfacher zu bedienen als etwa Indesign.

Doch damit ist nun Schluss. Apple schrieb heute: “As we focus our efforts on Pages, iBooks Author will no longer be updated and will soon be removed from the Mac App Store. You can continue to use iBooks Author on macOS 10.15 and earlier, and books previously published to Apple Books will remain available. If you have iBooks Author books you’d like to import into Pages for further editing, we have a book import feature coming to Pages soon.”

Die Software wird also noch auf dem aktuellen MacOS 10.15 laufen, auf höheren Versionen dann wohl nicht mehr. Anwender sollen auf Apples DTP-Programm Pages umsteigen, das allerdings doch etwas komplizierter zu bedienen ist.
